Abstract
What role can professionals in the building industry
play in the current drive for nationalism? There have
been calls for further development of our local building
materials so as to reduce soaring building costs.
Unfortunately, this is a specialized field in which the
architect cannot participate fully, Nigeria has been
blessed with an architectural history which can be
further developed with todays technology. It is believed
that this is within the architects sphere of influence.
This is the motivation behind this thesis, its essence
being to evolve a 'syntax' for contemporary Nigerian
architecture,
A conference hotel has been chosen to practicalise
the proposal as it would give an opportunity to bring
out most, if not all of its characteristics,
PHILOSOPHY
Adictionary defines a conference as an appointed
meeting for consultation or discussion. It is of special
interest to all organisations being a productive method of
organising research and results. The conference also acts
as a setting for national and international co-operation.
As such a conference hotel is a facility which primarily
provides facilities for such activities,
Lagos being the most cosmopolitan state of the country
requires such facilities as numerous conference are always
being organized,
GOALS
1. To provide by means of a study of traditional
architecture and other societal factors a synthesis
which would form the basis of an edifice which we can
relate to in design concept,
2. To provide an arhitectural space consistent and
conducive to the aforementioned definition of a conference
complete with support facilities for the eventual
users to work, live and relax,
SCOPE
Broadly defined, the project will consist of a
conference centre and a hotel. As the conference centre
should be capable of hosting international conference, it
would have all the necessary support facilities,
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
A public building such as a conference centre will
eventually attract dignitaries, tourists and other
categories of clientele, As such, its architecture should
be an event in itself. For the purpose of this thesis, it
is being used to experiment the theories behind the proposals
for a contemporary Nigerian architecture. As such it sould
be seen as an attempt to project an architecture that has
a deep rooted history in tradition,
CONCLUSION
Certain architectural critics notable charles Jencks
have talked about the death of modern architecture.
Various schools of thought - post modernism, neo-classism
have also grown since the later half Of the 20th Century.
The general idea is that architecture should retrace its
steps back to tradition. This thesis is an attempt to
evolve such an architecture for Nigeria, the conference
hotel being one of the many public facilities that could
be used to experiment with the evolved concepts,
