Abstract
ABSTRACT The study was out to determine the effects of housing opportunity, quality and cost on civil servants’ satisfaction with accommodation in Adamawa state. To achieve this, six specific objectives were raised for the study which included; identifying the level of availability of housing opportunity for civil servants in Adamawa state, to determine effects of cost of housing on housing satisfaction of civil servants in Adamawa state. Research questions were formulated in line with the specific objectives which include among others; what is the level of availability of housing opportunity for civil servants in Adamawa state, to what extent do the costs of housing affect the housing satisfaction of civil servants in Adamawa state. Six null hypotheses were posited in line with the research questions to include; there is no significant difference in civil servants views on the availability of housing opportunities in Adamawa state on account of their classification as junior, intermediate or senior civil servants, there is no significant difference among the junior, intermediate or senior civil servants views on the quality of houses available to civil servants in Adamawa state. Related literatures were reviewed in line with the objectives of the study under six headings. Survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study was 14,517 civil servants from fifteen (15) State Organizations in Adamawa state. Four hundred and fifty four (454) were sampled using proportionate sampling method. A questionnaire developed by the researcher was the instrument used to collect data from the respondents which was validated by Researchers’ Supervisors in Vocational and Technical Education department and the reliability estimate calculated for the instrument was 0.89. Frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the bio-data of the respondents .Means and standard deviation were also used to analyze the research questions while t-test, one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PMMC) statistic was used to measure the relationship variables. The result of the analysis indicated significant relationship between civil servants and availability of housing. Among other findings, there are no adequate housing opportunities for civil servants in Adamawa State. It was recommended that State Government through Ministry of Works and Housing should build houses to alleviate the suffering and cost of renting houses by civil servants in the state to enhance job performance.
