"AN EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE WORLD BANK ASSISTED AGRICULTURAL PROJECTS IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF THE KADUNA STATE AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Abstract
The World Bank's assistance to Nigeria's agricultural activities which began in the early 1970s has contributed enormously to the country's agricultural development. However, the gains are not felt as expected by many Nigerians. Hence, the need to evaluate the performance of the World Bank-assisted projects against this background. A study was conducted inorder to evaluate the performance of the World Bank-assisted Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs) in Nigeria with particular attention on the Kaduna State Agricultural Development project (KADP), over a five-year period (1992-1996). The methodology involved gathering data through unstructured personal interviews with staff of KADP and some farmers within the project area, as well as extracting data from historical evidences. The information gathered was critically analyzed using the percentile arrangement technique in view of the objectives of the study. The findings showed appreciable achievements by the ADPs and the KADP over the years, thereby justifying the involvement of the World Bank in the agricultural development of Nigeria. Admittedly, some segments of the society do not perceive the benefits of the World Bank, this was largely due to the corrosive national socio-economy and ignorance rather than the Bank's ineffectiveness.
