Abstract
Introduction The struggle for the overall development of Nigeria nation depends largely on the role of science and technology. One area which Nigeria like any other third world country must constantly focus its attention is how to accelerate its development, so as to improve the quality of life of its citizen and also to achieve national greatness. The major area of attainment of this goal is its ability to achieve its self-reliance policy. It must consider the acquiring and building up of technological skills and knowledge very fundamental and imperative. This required skill and first-hand knowledge can only be acquired and developed through elaborate and wellsustained research. However, it needs to be appreciated that just as very little can be achieved by any one who is physically and mentally impaired, so also can no country raise its level of productivity, if the dictum that "Health is wealth" is not fully taken into account. The World Health Organization recently launched its "Health for all by the year 2,000", to be achieved by all member nations of the world. In order for Nigeria to achieve this objective, the government needs a lot of foreign exchange which are not available for the importation of drugs. But with the availability of various raw material especially herbs of various medicinal use and for the fact that majority of rural populace depends on this for their health. The need to make proper research into local raw material of medicinal values becomes imperative. It is here that a Centre for Pharmaceutical Research and Development comes in. Long overdue, such research centre will contribute immensely to every aspect of pharmacy in the country. In the area of research into traditional medicines, there is no doubt that there is a rich source yet untapped. Goals The basic goal of the Research Centre is to make research into the medicinal use of various material, especially herbs that are found in Northern Nigeria and possible integration into modern medical practice. The thesis goal therefore is to provide an architecture compatible with the programme requirements and sympathetic to socio-cultural and climatic environment. Objectives Provision of functional space for an efficient and quality program execution. A pleasant and stimulating atmosphere sensitive to environmental conditions. An architecture which provides for flexible and adaptable use of spaces. Scope The thesis will be limited to administrative, information and research areas of the research centre which usually encompasses staff accommodation, production and supporting facilities. Conclusion It is hoped that a successful architectural programme may evolve which will take into consideration the successes and avoid the failures of the various research centres.
