Abstract
In the l a s t half of t h i s century, the attention of the world has been on key societal problems. These include the d r i f t of young men and women from rural to urban centres, the opening up of rural centres by constructing federal roads and the provision of f a c i l i t i e s such as e l e c t r i c i t y and pipe borne water. During t h i s . period also, considerable attention has been focused on making women more prominent in terms of contributing to the economy and development of t h e i r countries as well as realising t h e i r p o l i t i c al and civic right. The Better Life Programme introduced by the Federal Government in 1987 had the laudable objective of improving the l o t of the rural women through enlightenment and organized economic a c t i v i t i e s of farming, trading, handicrafts e t c . Going by government accounts, the programme had reported a huge success, p a r t i c u l a r l y in the areas of health, agriculture and co-operatives. This study is aimed at finding out how much b e t t e r off the rural women areafter six years of participation and gaining from the programme. The study is p a r t i c u l a r l y useful in Benue State since t h e r e are no industries to employ women on any reasonable scale.
