dc.description.abstract | The overall problem of the investigation is to determine the causes of students’ unrest in post primary schools in Zaria township and at the same time to compare the opinions of the students, teachers and administrators regarding the causes of these students’ unrest. Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following questions. 1. What are the causes of students’ unrest in post primary schools in Zaria township according to2 (a) the students (b) the teachers (c) the administrators? 2. Are the causes of students’ unrest, as identified by the students, teachers and administrators, related to the kind or lack of Guidance Services offered in the school? 3. Is there any significant difference in the opinions of the students, teachers and administrators? Hypotheses The following null hypotheses were stated as follows: 1. The opinions expressed by students teachers and administrators in post primary schools in Zaria township on causes of students’ unrest are not related to the type of or lack of guidance service. 2. There is no significant difference in the opinions of students, teachers and administrators with regards to causes of students’ unrest in post primary schools in Zaria township. Instruments The instruments used were the questionnaires which seemingly included the same type of interview questions on respondents’ backgrounds and on some attitude responses. The students’ questionnaires were modified to meet their understanding and were all administered simultaneously. The administrators and the teachers' questions were similar both in language and setting. For all the attitude responses, items on administrative, school work factors, peer group, students teachers relationship and guidance service factors were included as areas that cause students' unrest. Findings Based on the data presented in the forty, four tables the researcher made the following summation: 1. Problems of unrest arise from attitude of indifference to students problems by the administrators teachers and hostel officials. Thus crisis situations from food and lack of facilities escalate when students feel they are unkindly treated. 2. Both the teachers and the students believe that proper guidance service can minimise students’ unrest. 3. While administrators and teachers blame students' unrest to school operations, homes, and the public, the students are -Strnogly opposed to these ideas. They insist on the attitude of indifference among the school authorities as the strongest factor that may cause unrest in schools. Recommendation 1. Since students are sensitive about the attitudes of school authorities towards their problems. The school authorities should modify or improve their present attitudes towards the students. Students should be attended to, with their particular problems, as individuals. 2. It is also recommended that there should be proper guidance services in all the post primary schools to arrest crisis situations arising from school operations. This will thus minimise students’ unrest in secondary schools in Zaria township in particular. Moreover students with the help of guidance counselors will be better, able to make right decisions in face of problems and attain better self satisfaction and self fulfillment. It is also recommended that similar research in other townships should be undertaken in the future. Again situations of unrest should be examined between schools with proper guidance services and those without. | en_US |
