Abstract
This roseqrch was designed to find out the methods of
teaching used in social studies, the evaluation techniques
used in assessing social studies outcomes, and the attitude
of teachers toward social studies.
The study attempted to answer six research questions.
These are:
1. What methods of teaching do teachers use in social studies?
2. What techniques are used in assessing the outcomes of
social studies learning?
3. Do teachers evaluate both the cognitive and affective
outcomes of social studies?
4. Do social studies1 teachers specialise in the subject?
5. Do social studies teachers have long periods of teaching
experience?
6. What attitudes do the present teachers have toward
social studies?
A total of forty-eight social studies teachers were
involved in the study. The main instrument used in collecting
relevant data was written questionnaire.
The data collected was analysed by converting responses
into percentages. The findings of the study showed that
expository and lecture methods were mostly used in teaching
social studies. Teachers evaluated only the cognitive
outcomes and neglected the affective outcomes of learning.
Most of the teachers who taught social studies specialised
in Geography, History and Sociology.
A majority of the teachers had taught social studies for
three years. Almost all the teachers supported the
introduction of social studies in the school curriculum.
Having considered the results of this study, the
researcher recommends that all the Colleges of Education in
Anambra State should introduce the teaching of social studies
as a minor or major subject in the College Curriculum.
Any University in the state which has a Department of
Education should establish study programmes in social
studies leading to higher degrees.
Workshops, seminars, refresher courses and conferences
on social studies should be constantly organized.
Social studies should be taught not only by expository
and lecture methods but also by role-playing, project,
inquiry, simulation, induction and deduction methods.
While the practice of evaluating social studies through
paper and pencil test is appropriate, there is need to lay
more emphasis on the evaluation of the affective objectives.
It is therefore necessary that the following evaluation
devices should be constantly used by teachers of social
studies. These are Observation, Rating scale, Check lists,
Records and Questionnaire.
