Abstract
Municipal Waste have become a global concern particularly in the manner they are indiscriminately dump and poorly managed in towns and cities of the world including our capital city of Abuja. This Study established the gap in the policy framework designed to effect cost recovery mechanism in the process of managing the compounded problems of solid waste in Abuja metropolis. The study revealed that the residents of Abuja are desirous of quality, efficient and effective waste management service delivery but the provision of such services are constraint by the commercialization policy adopted by the Abuja waste management authorities. This study will provide valuable insights and allow broad lessons to be drawn out. The major finding is that municipal authorities have to encourage the private waste service providers to move at their own pace while they develop and implement sustainable plans and new technologies for upgrading Municipal Solid Waste management facilities and systems. This study also gives some views on public awareness for waste management. The study also identifies the problems in the present scenario of the Municipal Solid Waste Management. Meanwhile, it is hoped that this study can be a primary reference in urban planning and management study for municipal waste management in cities in years to come.
