Abstract
A field study was conducted during the 1990
cropping season at Samaru to investigate the effects of
plant density and row spacing an the growth and yield
of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) Var. Isaanka.
The treatments which consisted of plant densities
(17,800; 35,600; 53,300; 71,100 and 88,900 plants)
and three row spacings (25, 50 and 75cm), were laid out
in a randomized complete block design with Four
replications.
The highest seed and oil yields per hectare were
obtained at 53,300 plants/ha. The number of seeds per
head, 1000 - seed weight, seed yield per plant,
plant height, leaf area per plant, number of leaves
per plant, plant dry weight, head dry weight, stem and
head diameters were significantly decreased while plant
height was significantly increased by increasing plant
density. Lodging was more severe at low and high
densities compared with medium density.
Seed yield was significantly higher at 50cm than
25cm row spacing while the difference between 50 and
75cm was not. significant. Plant dry weight and head
diameter significantly increased with increasing raw
spacing up to 75cm while stem diameter, head dry weight
number of seeds per head and seed yield per plant
increased with increasing row spacing up to 50cm only.
The interaction between plant density and raw
spacing was significant on plant dry weight (12 WAS)
and head diameter Both parameters were highest at
17,800 plants/ha and 75cm row spacing. Correlation
analysis indicated that seed yield was significantly
negatively correlated with most of the yield components,
but the reletionship between seed yield, plant height and
lead area index was significantly postive.
The results obtained in this study indicated that
the highest seed and oil yields of sunflower were
obtained at 53,300 plants/ha and at a spacing oF 75cm
between raws
