A geophysical survey was carried out in the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa and the process of electrode layout employed was the Schlumberger array which was applied in the vertical mode. The maximum current electrode separation was 300m. Fourty - six vertical electrical sounding surveys were carried out, with six of these being radially sounded in three directions oriented at 60° to each other (azimuthal sounding). Data analysis using zohdy software was applied. Analysis showed that the area comprised of four subsurface layers. The first which is the top layer is lateritic while the second layer is strongly weathered. The second layer constitutes the aquifer zones in the area having relatively low resistivity range of 30 - 2 0 0m . The depth to basement varies at different locations and areas of shallow basement or high resistivities can serve as good locations for the erection of buildings. The variation in the depth to the basement indicates that the basement profile is not a smooth continuous surface but an undulating surface. The average depth to basement was found to be 33 meters and this suggests that the depth to basement in the survey area is generally shallow. Analysis of the azimuthal sounding surveys showed that the subsurface of the survey area is generally anisotropic. It is therefore recommended to carry out azimuthal sounding surveys at any desired survey area in order to select the preferred direction of sounding prior to any main resistivity survey. Fractures were found to occur at depths ranging from 5 meters to 50 meters depending on the sounding location. The pattern of anisotropy associated to fractures was found to be neither circular nor elliptical. The general trend of fractures in the area could not be ascertained or generalized since the data coverage was limited and more azimuthal sounding surveys are required to cover the entire survey area. The sounding points in which fractures occur are recommendable locations for groundwater bore holes.en_US
