Abstract
In the arts, drama and the visual arts are used as instruments with which
to entertain, comment and correct socio-political ills within a society.
This is especially true in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. Hence, drama
and visual art are two distinct forms of art among all other forms.
However in the realisation of the end products of these two art forms,
the two departments in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria have exposed
their students to the peculiarities of each form.
The experiences gained have exposed visual arts students to possible
similarities/differences in styles, themes and approach to problem
analysis/resolution between drama and the visual arts. It is therefore as
a result of the desire to articulate, expose and show the need for the two
art forms to be properly used for the mutual benefit of both drama and
visual art students/practitioners that this study is carried out. This is
made possible by using a comparative analytical study to:
a. Investigate specific similarities/differences that exist between the
two forms of art.
b. Investigate certain social functions which these two art forms
Perform in the promotion of an ideal and dynamic social culture.
c. Investigate the relevance of visual art in dramatic productions.
d. Assessing the need for the fine arts and dramatic arts department
to integrate their programmes for the benefit of their creative students.
At the end of the study, it was discovered that, dramatic art is also
visual and both arts are beautiful and entertaining. It was also found that
the visual art is permanent., while the dramatic art is ephemeral.
Furthermore both arts address social issues within the society and
sometimes proffer solutions. Visual artists were discovered to be
component members of the dramatic process. Finally the need to
integrate the programmes of the two departments was found to be
Overwhelmingly supported. Hence the researcher recommends the
establishment of a faculty of applied and creative arts. It is also
recommended that there should be joint seminars/workshops and
annual festivals of creative minds. The researcher recommends the
sponsorship of interdisciplinary studies to cope with current global
trend.
