Abstract
Quantitation of carbazole alkaloids (Carbazole, 3-Methyl
Carbazole.Glycozoline and Glycozolidine) was carried out using
Gas-Liquid Chromatography (GLC ). This was -the first time a
quantitative work was undertaken on carbazole alkaloids©
A stock solution of 1mg/ml in chloroform was prepared of
each of the above mentioned carbazole alkaloids© Appropriate
working concentration were prepared by suitable dilutions of
various stock solutions .with chloroform. Heptazolidine ,
(lmg/ml) in chloroform, was used as the internal standard (i.s.)
The plant extract (Glycosmis Pentaphylla of family Rutaceas)
solution (unknown sample) was prepared by drawing a drop
(weighed 23mg) from the light Petroleum extract by using a
clean glass rod and diluting it to 5ml with chloroform. The
I.S. (1ml) was added to all solutions prior to analysis© All
samples (3ul) were chromatographed on a Bye Unicam series 204
chromatograph equipped with FID and Temperature programmer©
A single point internal standard method was employed for the
analysis of result. TLG was performed of carbazole, 3 - methyl
carbazole and the Crude plant extract©
Single point method employed was faster and more
convenient that the traditional individual calibration curve
method. The concentrations of the alkaloids were found as:-
1. Carbazole - 17.35 ug/ml (0.4% w/w)
2. 3-Methyl Carbazole - 186.67 • (4.06% * )
4. Glycozolidine - 189.70 " (4.1 2% " )
plant
TLC results added supportive evidence that the/extract
contains carbazole and 3 - methyl-carbazole (all identified
for the first time from this plant species)c G-LC was found
to be a very convenient means of finding the levels of components
in a plant extract.
