Abstract
The oral art of the Tangale people of Bauchi State has not yet received any
serious academic attention. There is the need to therefore explore the art form of Sindi
(stories and story- telling )among the Tangale people. This thesis examines the Sindi
tradition in Eastern Tangale Community with a view to debunking the postulations of
the colonial anthropologists that no serious stories existed in traditional Africa and
their view that the few forms of oral narrations that existed were uninteresting and
trivial. Africa did not hear of folktales for the first time when the whiteman came.
Africa had a culture and oral narrations have been in existence even before the coming
of the whiteman.
This thesis examines the form and content of Tangale Sindi with particular
attention to its characteristics, the roles played by the narrators and audience, and
functions of stories, thus laying the basis for the appreciation of the stories. The work
shows how the oral narratives have helped to preserve and expand an important part of
a major cultural practice.
The tales are expressions of the mores of the Tangale society and they
therefore provide a means of sustaining the cohesion of the Tangale society. The
performance of the tales, therefore remind the audience of the acceptable qualities and
conducts and those abhored by the Tangale society.
In the course of the study, attention was paid to the traditional beliefs and
cultural practices of the Tangales. The first chapter discusses the historical
background of the Tangale people, the methodology and the review of some
