Abstract
ABSTRACT
The title o f this thesi s is "Exploration o f Hausa traditional
mat weaving fo r contemporary window blinds, usin g palm fronds "
by Beauty Erez i Ogbogo.
Weaving is a n ar t that ha s been practised from pre-historic
times. There ar e two type s of weaving: the loom and off-loom
weaving. Off-loom weaving involve s th e manipulation of materials
wit h the fingers to form a structure . The Hausa traditional
mat weaving is an off-loom weaving that ha s been in existence
over a long period of time . Unfortunately , the beliefs and
tradition s of th e Hausa mat weavers, have made them to become
reluctant , if no t resistant t o changes and innovation s i n th e
craft .
This work is therefor e a n attemp t t o explor e th e
possibilit y of usin g the Hausa traditiona l mat weaving fo r
contemporary window blinds . The same basi c raw material
used by the traditional craftsmen which is the palm
frond would stil l b e used .
The problems of this study are :
The exploration of the Hausa traditional mat weaving
crafts t o highlight possible innovation s and improvements;
- Adaptation of the local mat into use as contemporary
window blind s and
The development of a product design based on th e creative
potential o f the traditional mat that could b e appreciate d b y
bot h the middle and high classes of people in the society .
The objective of th e stud y are to :
Document th e production process of the Hausa traditional
mat weaving crafts .
