Abstract
This research project seeks to examine and appraise the use of Electronic
Banking as a tool for quality services and cash managements. It extensively examines
the theory of cash management and deals with Electronic Banking as it relates to it.
Avery detailed conventional banking procedures used by cash managers to achieve
the overall objectives of ensuring that a company retains adequate liquidity and
properly manages the timing of cash inflow and outflow was presented at the end of
the discussions.
The objectives of the appraisal is to examine the applications or uses of .
Electronic Banking for quality services and or cash management keeping in mind the
solution offered by conventional manual banking procedures. The'idea is to highlight
its use, bring out the advantages for quality effective services and shows its identified
shortcomings along with measures to deter fraudulent practices. Availability of
information at the disposal of every cash manager using Electronic Banking for cash
management makes its use invaluable if the joint objectives of accelerated collection
of receivables and systematic delay of payable is to be achieved. Also, by the touch
of a computer button, information regarding bank balances are within the manager's
reach instantly. Similarly, instructions can be issued by the cash manager on his
personal computer in the office to the bank using software, computer communication.
In both cases, accuracy of information is assured and faster decision on the use of
funds can be taken appropriately.
This research study was compiled following interviews with Electronic
Banking Consultants in FSB International Bank Pic and Access Bank Pic who have
worked together with Cash Managers of various companies to design account
receivable and account payable systems that make extensive use of Electronic
Banking. Reference materials from various authors regarding the origin and banking
history, conventional banking and cash management procedures and practices were
also used. Also discussions held with the supervisor and colleagues were
acknowledged.
The practice and use of the system is just coming into being in Nigeria. With
time to come, more people will join in its uses most especially when the cost of the
electronic products become less. This of course means that a lot of companies will •
use Electronic Banking for Cash Management and fraudulent practices will rear its
ugly head.
Future research on the subject should be aimed at itemising various successful
or attempted frauds reported and proffer solutions to mitigate losses should be
forwarded.
