Abstract
The importance of leisure and recreation all over the world cannot be overemphasized especially with the accompanying stress of a technologically advancing world. A popular adage which says "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy or Jane a dull girl", is applicable in all strata of life regardless of individual differences, as we seek advancement in our modern world. Increasing modernization has led to an unprecedented demand for leisure and recreation as recorded in history, and it varies from one region to the other. The struggle for survival in our over populated city centres has considerably diverted attention to work with little or no time for adequate rest, which is vital for our physical and mental well being. This necessitates the provision of recreational facilities in close proximity to users, which must meet rising contemporary demands for maximum utilization. This is because, increase in technology has affected the taste and demand of users. The essence of this research is to study the present user pattern of the Clubhouse and how it affects the demand for leisure and recreation. Observation has shown that clubhouses in Nigeria are poorly maintained, which in turn affects its patronage. The idea of upgrading Yelwa Club is an attempt at raising the standard and patronage of the clubhouse in Nigeria, thereby improving its image. As such, the first part of this study entails a concise and comprehensive analysis of leisure, recreation and the clubhouse as obtained in related literatures and existing similar institutions. The second part gives an overview of contemporary demands of users and factors governing the choices made, with proposed architectural solution that can help resolve these problems as a means of enhancing recreation which is an integral of our every day life.
