The susceptibility of West African Dwarf (WAD) goats to experimental C1 ruminantium infection was evaluated over a period of 9 weeks using ten infected and four control animals. All the 10 infected goats reacted following intravenous inoculation of C. ruminantium infected blood. The incubation period varied from 9-11 days. Two of the WAD goats infected reacted hyperacutely 12 days postinfection high temperature (41°C + 0.5) was maintained for 3 days, the animals then collapsed and died in convulsion without obvious clinical signs. Three of the 8 infected WAD goats reacted acutely 15 days postinfection, the temperature remained high for 4-6 days and then became subnormal before the animals died. Fever, incordination intermittent convulsion circling and paddling movements where the main clinical features seen in these acutely affected animals. Five of the 8 infected WAD goats which reacted acutely recovered from the infection after maintaining a high temperature (41°C + 0.5) for 8-9 days suggesting the mild form of the disease. No other clinical signs were observed at 20 days post-infection. Since some of the clinical signs of the disease manifested by these infected WAD goats were severe leading to death in 5 of the 10 infected goats, it is hereby concluded that, WAD goats are susceptible to C.ruminantium infection, and that both mild and fatal cases of the disease also exist in experimental WAD goats.en_US
