In seeking a solution to the problem of 'blindnuts' often reported in parts of the Sudan ecological zone of Nigeria, investigations were carried out for two seasons at Ladanawa (12°32'N; 07°38'E) backed by one season of observation at Samaru (Northern Guinea savanna, 11 ll'N; 07°38'E) to observe the effects of moisture and gypsum on groundnut development and fill. Despite difficulties of management experienced in the conduct of the trials treatment effects were generally consistant between seasons and locations. The application of supplementary irrigation generally increased the amount of vegetative growth as measured by height, foliage cover and number of vegetative branches. It was evident that the most important factor which adversely affected groundnut pod-fill and yield was inadeguate moisture availability particularly at the time of peg formation and pod development. The use of gypsum without first nsuring the supply of adequate moisture did not help much in alleviating the problem of groundnut pod-fill.en_US
