| dc.description.abstract | Investigation of the pattern of inheritance and nature of gene action governing the inheritance of some quantitative traits and the qualitative purple gene marker were carried out in pearl millet. Continuous variation was observed for plant height, ear length, ear girth and leaf area. The gene number varied from as low as -5.77 to 3.98. There were involvements of both additive and non-additive gene actions in the inheritance of each of the quantitative traits. Apparent indications of skewness in some F2 data distributions indicated the presence of complementary gene action. Low negative and positive heritability estimates were observed probably resulting from poor genetic diversity of parent materials. Similarly low heterosis and inbreeding depression were observed. Discrete distribution and digenic inheritance of the purple gene marker on the seed, midribs and whole plant were observed. Probability values were low for each of the purple plant parts. Low probability values may have resulted from low level of homozygosity of the parents with the purple marker. | en_US |
