Abstract
IKEJA PLAZA (A LOCAL GOVERNMENT INNOVATION)
AYQ THORPE: M.Sc. Arch. Thesis 1978/79
Users:- The Entire Ikeja Community.
General:
(a) Plaza:
This is an open place surrounded by public buildings. It is
used as an out-door meeting area for formal and informal a c t i v i t i e s.
(b) Local Government:
Government at grass-root level exercised through representative
councils established by law to exercise specific powers within
defined areas.
(D) Ikeja:
Located at the northern end of the Lagos metropotis, Ikeja
has a population of about 500,000 inhabitants. The dual role as a
state as well as Local Government Capital has resulted in rapid
influx of people in search of better social, business as well as
commercial opportunities. Consequently, there is a general shortage
of recreational facilities for the community coupled with this
is the fact that the city officials are in temporary accommodation
which is congested and bureaucratic; a fact n which makes the
community demand for the existence of socio-civic facilities in the
city centre. Thus the need for 'Ikeja Plaza which would serve as
the focal point of the city.
Design Objective:
This is to make 'Ikeja Plaza1 a place where people will
have pleasure in going to for various reasons ranging from business,
shopping! relaxation to entertainment. This (bold innovation will
be sponsored by the Ikeja local government council,. In this way
the local government will be able to provide basic social facilities
to the community and also generate some funds which would be used in
financing other local government activities likerefuse disposal,
or road costruction.
Design Requirements:
These has been grouped under three broad categories:-
(a) Commercial Shops and Offices for professional firm,
and businessmen;.
(b) Administrative Offices for effective running of
local government affairs.
(c) Social facilities for the community including the
