dc.description.abstract | "AN APPRAISAL OF THE ACTIVITIES OF DEVELOPMENT BANKS TOWARDS THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA. A CASE STUDY OF NIGERIAN AGRICULTURAL AND CO-OPERATIVE BANK LIMITED". This research work is mainly concerned with determinining to what extent the activities of Development Banks have contributed to the economic development of Nigeria. In this light, the project is concerned with such important issues as, the basic motive for the establishment of these specialist financial institutions in Nigeria. Other important issues covered are determining whether the activities of the Development Banks are actually geared towards achieving the role for which they were established and, the sectors of the economy covered by these Banks. These aspects are contained in the first and second chapters of the research report. Also, the medium or method through which these Banks contribute to the nation's economic development is looked into and, an attempt is made to ascertain the effectiveness of these methods in aiding the accomplishment of the Banks' objectives. Lastly, but not tl)e least, problems, if any, hindering the BanksS from effective operations were explored for possible solutions. Theso aspects are covered in the last three chapters-of the write-up. viii The Nigerian Agricultural and Co-operative Bank NACB) Limited is selected from the five Development Banks as a case study. The activities of the Bank is evaluated from its inception (1973) to 1991. Findings drawn from the study indicate that, the specialist financial institutions were established primarily to enhance the pace of economic development of the nation and, the main method of achieving this objective is through the provision of medium and long term loans for implementation of viable and development oriented projects. In addition, the findings indicate that not all important sectors of the economy are being served by the Banks and; most importantly NACB chosen as a case study has made reasonable contributions to the level of economic development of the country. However, the Bank has some problemSthat constrain it from effectively achieving the objectives for which it was established. Thus, recommendations are proffered as possible solutions to enhance the performance of the Bank. | en_US |
