dc.description.abstract | The subject matter of the study is concerned with the structure and problems of management of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL). The ASCL was established under the National Steel Council Decree No. 60 of 18th September 1979. Ajaokuta Steel Complex is the largest of the five steel plants established in Nigeria, It is an integrated steel plant designed to produce steel based on the traditional blast furnace. When the plant becomes operational the manpower required will amount to 30,000 making it one of the biggest organisation in the country. Organisation related to systematic arrangement of persons and materials to achieve a desired goal. Management is also a process of getting activities completed with and through other people. Proper structural arrangement in an organisation can be used to identify and describe the role performance needed for the attainment of management objectives. Organisation objectives must accord with existing social and cultural norms of the society. The analyses of the data were done using frequencies and simple percentages. The major points analysed included, the role of the company, the functions of management, the present structure of the ASCL, the various principles of organisation and the problems of management. Five major departments exist in the ASCL namely Production; Technical; Commercial; Finance and Accounts; and Administration. Each department is headed by a Deputy General Manager (DGM). The overall management head of the ASCL is the General Manager/Chief Executive. There is a Board of Directors empowered to formulate policies for the company. The major management problems of the company include: (a) Manpower (b) Finance (c) Accommodation (d) Discipline. Some of the recommendations include the review of the present structure to ensure good management; accelerated housing programme should be carried out to ensure adequate accommodation for workers; the Federal Government should provide bhe Company with sufficient and continuous funds to enable it execute the planned programmes. | en_US |
