Abstract
The nature of the transportation system of any Country in the world determines the standard of social life of its people Similarly, the economy of any nation also depends largely on its transportation network and efficiency The need for transportation as an important and essential ingredient for human existence cannot be overemphasised The demand for transportation for various purposes is ever on the increase in the modern world Experts in the area of transportation technology are working ceaselessly to meet up with these demands by improving on the design and engineering of various modes of transportation Comfort, safety and speed have become important factors in the choice of the mode of transport by the individual traveller, therefore, intermodal competition is also on the increase as transport sectors are trying hard to use various techniques and modern innovations to attract passengers (or travellers) Rail travel has entered a new age of high speed Sleek trains with unsurpassed levels of comfort and efficiency are needed to meet the new world demand for enhanced steel wheel technology. Everyday train move people, products, equipment, fuel and food in an efficient, economical and environmentally desirable manner Unfortunately, this statement is not very true of Nigeria today. The essential requirement for a modern and efficient railway system is lacking in the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), and thus, the present predicament.
