Abstract
ABSTRACT This study attempts to understand the cultural dynamic of the contemporary world. It is in this context that an African cultural festival, is discussed. The study is also a contribution to the on-going debate or inquiry by many scholars on the fate of African ways of life in the context of globalization. Consequently, the concept and process of globalization and its implications on cultural practices such as Nkadioka cultural festivals are carefully examined. The work is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. It covers some of the theoretical issues relating to the thesis. Basic concepts such as culture, festival, drama/theatre African drama, performance theory and globalization are defined. There is also a discussion on the historical origin of the Umudioka community where the festival is practiced. The next chapter contains the review of related works on the festival and other related practices. Works on culture, drama/theatre and globalization are also reviewed. Chapter three is the analytical chapter. It discusses the origin and practice of Nkadioka cultural festival, which is our case study. Also discussed in this chapter are the Ijele Masquerade, dramatic and directorial patterns of this festival, the distinction between the director in modern threatre and social significance of Nkadioka cultural festival how it can contribute to national identity and development. The fourth chapter is on the concept and process of globalization, its implications on cultural practices such as Nkadioka festival practices. Chapter five is the concluding chapter. It summarizes the findings of the work and examines to what extent local cultures are resistant to the pressures of globalization.
