Abstract
This study investigated "factors affecting,
performance in Christian. Religious Studies in
Junior Secondary School three (J.S.S. III)
Examination in Zaria and Soba Local Government
Areas of Kaduna State.
To achieve, this purpose, six research
problem questions were raised. The questions
were based on finding out the level of exposure
of the students to the course contents, motivation,
qualification of the teachers and methodology of
teaching the subject.
Ten schools were randomly selected out of
twenty one schools in the Local Government Areas
under study. The schools were selected through
the method of casting lots. The subjects of the
study were final year students of the Junior
Secondary School (J.S.S. III) and all the CRS,
teachers in the twenty one schools.
Two sets of questionnaires were used to
collect data for the study. One was designed
to collect data from teachers concerning the
exposure of students on the subject, motivation,
their qualification, keeping of continuous
vi
assessment and methodology of teaching CRS.
While the other questionnaire was meant to collect
data from the students on the exposure and the
teaching methods used in lessons. The data were
analysed by the use of table of percentages to
determine the frequencies of the response. The
results of the study revealed that some parents
do not encourage their children to study CRS
seriously. It also showed that continuous
assessments are not properly kept in some schools
before the students' final examination.
From the result of the study, recommendations
were made. These include: That CRS teachers
should try and provide teaching aids for their
lessons. Unprofessional CRS teachers should try and
go for professional training in order to improve
on their work.
In-house workshops should be organised in
CRS Departments. This will help the CRS teachers
who are not professionally qualified and also help
refresh the qualified teachers.
Recommendations for further studies were also
made. This includes a comprehensive study on the
use of teaching aids in CRS lessons, the keeping
of continuous assessment on CRS, parents interests
in their children in the study of CRS.
