dc.description.abstract | Field trials were conducted at two locations namely Samaru in Zaria, Kaduna State and Kadawa, Kano State during the 2019 wet season to determine the effects of five (5) okra varieties (Clemson spineless, Ex-Basawa, Jokoso, Ex-Samaru and NHAE-47), three (3) insecticides (Lambda-cyhalothrin, Cypermethrin + Dimethoate and Chlorantraniliprole + Lambda- Cyhalothrin) with an Untreated control and time of sowing (July and August). Treatments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and replicated three (3) times. A total of four spray applications at two weeks‟ interval beginning from 7 WAS were carried out. Observations were recorded on the larval count, percentage incidence, damage on leaves and okra fruit yield. Variety Ex-Samaru recorded the least larval incidence of okra leaf roller at Samaru (1.67 %) and Kadawa (1.67 %) while Variety Jokoso recorded the highest incidence of leaf roller at Samaru (6.57 %) and Kadawa (7.33%). Plots sprayed with Ampligo (Chlorantraniliprole + Lambda-Cyhalothrin) and Cyperplus (Cypermethrin + Dimethoate) were found to have the least incidence at Samaru (1.67 %) while plots sprayed with Ampligo alone recorded the least incidence at Kadawa (1.67 %). Lambda (Lambda-cyhalothrin) recorded the highest incidence at Samaru (3.67 %) and Kadawa (3.06 %). Ex-Samaru recorded the least leaf damage at Samaru (70.71 %) and Kadawa (70.71 %), while Jokoso recorded the highest leaf damage at Samaru (82.21 %) and Kadawa (80.50 %). Also, plots sprayed with Ampligo recorded the least leaf damage at Samaru (70.71 %) and Kadawa (70.71 %) over plots sprayed with Cyperplus, Lambda and Untreated control in that order at both locations. At Samaru, varieties sprayed with Ampligo was found to reduce the population of leaf roller over other insecticides while at Kadawa, varieties sprayed with Ampligo and Cyperplus reduced the population of the okra leaf roller. At both locations, plots sprayed with Lambda was the least effective over the untreated control in reducing the leaf roller population. Larval population occurred first at 7 WAS for crops sown in July and 8 WAS for crops sown in August. The peak population period was September and October (9WAS) for crops sown in July and August; respectively. Jokoso variety recorded the highest larval population, while Ex-Samaru recorded the least larval population. Ex-Samaru recorded the highest yield at Samaru and Kadawa while NHAE-47 recorded the least yield at Samaru and Kadawa. Crops sprayed with Ampligo produced the highest yield at Samaru (3362.86 kg/ha) and Kadawa (4012.85 kg/ha) and crops sown in July had more yield (3933.85 kg/ha) than crops sown in August (2822.31 kg/ha.) | en_US |
