Abstract
Since the discovery of oil in Nigeria by Shell D'Arc in 1956, the major oil
companies and the independent marketers have been very important in the distribution
of petroleum products.
The activities of these independent marketers as regards to the problems of their
financial and physical incapability as well as their impatriotic behaviors is what this
project investigates. The focus is on the distribution of PMS only in Kaduna area by the
independent marketers.
In the course of the study many independent marketers as well as NNPC staff
were inlerriened.
It was found out that the independent marketers receive inadequate supplies of
PMS from NNPC and also they lack broad capital base to acquire larger and better
trucks to transport the PMS to neighboring countries for higher profits. All these
contribute to the shortage of PMS in filling stations of the marketers.
Finally, the independent marketers play important role in the distribution of
petroleum products in Nigeria, though alot has been done in the area of distribution,
financing and patriotism on the part of theses independent marketers to achieve their goal
of marketing PMS available in all the nooks and corners of the country.
