Abstract
This study was undertaken to examine the attitudes of employed husbands
toward household work in Nigerian families: A case study of Kaduna state. Four
objectives and four research questions were raised. Four null hypotheses were
postulated which are as follows: there is no significant relationship between
employed husbands’ educational attainment and their attitudes toward the
performance of household work. Secondly, there is no significant relationship
between the occupations of employed husbands and their attitudes toward the
performance of household work in their families. Thirdly, there is no significant
difference between the participation of employed husbands in traditional and
modern roles in the family. Fourthly there is no significant relationship between
the types of families that employed husbands have and the household tasks they
like to participate in. A survey research method was adopted, and a selfdesigned
questionnaire was used in collecting data for the study. Using random
sampling method, a sample of five hundred and twelve (512) was selected from a
population of five thousand, one hundred and twenty-eight (5,128). The sample
was drawn from Kaduna state civil service commission, in six local government
areas. Stratified random sampling technique was used to classify the population
into husbands and wives. The data collected was subjected to statistical
analysis, using the frequency and percentages, Pearson product moment
correlation coefficient, Paired T-test and Spearman Rank Order correlation
procedure. The findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between
employed husbands’ educational attainment, occupation and their attitudes
toward the performance of household work in their families. There is also a
significant relationship between the types of families that employed husbands
have and the household tasks they like or dislike participating in, and there is a
significant difference between the participation of employed husbands in
traditional and modern roles. In light of the findings, some recommendations that
would help husbands’ positive attitudes toward household work and their
participation in household work have been made. For example, religious
organizations and mass media should create awareness and encourage
husbands to see the need to participate in household tasks, which should cut
across all members of the family.
