dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to find out the perception of students and teachers on democratic values in social studies programme of Colleges of Education in Nigeria. A sample of six Colleges of Education out of the forty-six colleges that offer social studies at NCE level was drawn for collecting data for study. Five hypothesis were formulated for the study and a twenty-two item questionnaire on democratic values was administered to students and teachers to find out their perception. The data collected was analyzed using tables of percentages and the t-test statistic. From the result of the test, Hoi, Ho3 and Ho5 were retained while Ho2 and Ho4 were rejected. The study further suggested a more serious emphasis on the acquisition of values necessary for attaining stable democracy in the NCE social studies programme. Serious focus be given to transmission of demcratic values in the B. Ed programme since three years of the NCE programme is not enough to fully transmit values which fall in the effective domain. Teachers should be interested in the feelings of their students about what is thought in the classroom to ensure effective teaching-learning process. Teacher of social studies be motivated, to ease their work of nation building through better renumeration, in-service training, seminar and worshops. Suggestion for further research include extending the study to cover universities, polytechnis and colleges of technologies. It could also cover economic problems and effective ways of teaching and evaluation democratic values in social studies. | en_US |
