For a' long time now there has been a growing need to bring banking closer to the grassroots thereby inculcating a sound banking habit within the grassroots population of the country because of its numerous advantages. In this light, concerted efforts like the rural banking scheme and the peoples bank were evolved. The failure of the rural banking scheme to actually inculcate banking, habits among the rural populace of the country led to the introduction cf the peoples Bank the inadequacies of which led to the introduction of a community based banking scheme known as the Community Banks. (CB). About four years now after its creation it is only pertinent at this juncture to ask to what extent have the CBs achieved the laudable objective of developing good banking habits within the rural population of the country. To find out what extent the CBs have succeeded in this regards, a case study of Gwong community Bank Fadan Kagoma was undertaken. Two structured questionnaire were idministered, one to the banks management and the other to members of the Gwong Community. The findings revealed that the introduction of CBs has indeed brought banking activities closer to the grassroots thereby allowing them have close access to banking acilities that were hitherto not available to them. In addition, the CBs have generated a lot o interest and awareness on banking activities thus steadily developing sound banking habits within the rural communities of the country. There is however, a wide gap between the level of iterest and awareness generated by the CF activities and actual patronage by members of the community, There is need for CB management to evolve policies that will bridge such a gap.en_US
