This project, titled A study of the Implements- I tion of Continuous Assessment in Social Studies: A case study of J.S.S. of Taraba State, is to find out how the continuous assessment is being implemented in Taraba State, 10 years (1982-1992) after it was introduced in the educational system. Three research questions and two hypotheses are advanced for the study. The population of the study are the students in JSS III and Social Studies teachers. The sample size is 38 and 300, teachers and students respectively. Two sets of questionnaire were used in collecting data. In addition, students' scores in continuous assessment and Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE) for 1989, 1990 and 1991 were used for the study. Correlation Research Method, Pearson Product Moment Correlation of Association r., t-test and percentage were used as statistical methods. The following are some of the findings 1. It was found that majority of teachers do not use variety of techniques and methods of evaluation. - Vi - 2. Most of the teachers do not follow the guidelines. The teachers used classroom discussion, essay and objectives more than any other methods to evaluate students. 3. It was also found that majority of teachers never pre-tested their test items. 4. Most teachers (61%) had never attended workshop even once. 5. Some of the problems teachers faced with students of Social Studies, is students' irregularity at tests and examination, cheating among students in examination; overload of students examination scripts and the teachers inability to assess students in the affective domain. 6. From students point of view, most teachers set difficult questions, do not teach concepts and supervise students well during examinations. The following recommendations are made: 1. The Taraba State Ministry of Education should employ more qualified Social Studies teachers to replace the nonprofessionals. - vil - 2. Teachers should stick to the stipulated guidelines and methods for implementing the continuous assessment. 3. Social Studies teachers should be given money to take their students on visit and carry out project work.en_US
