Abstract
This study was designed to examine the effect of social studies education on national
integration of teachers and students of upper basic education level in Zaria Educational
Zone of Kaduna State. The study was focused to finding out the extent to which social
studies education, which is regarded as a problem solving discipline has imparted on
learners and Teachers from diverse ethnic group in Nigeria in terms of national
integration in Nigeria, by developing in the learners critical thinking and positive
attitudes towards citizens from other ethnic and religious groups, with the aim of uniting
and developing the nation. Three research questions and three hypotheses were
formulated. One of the objectives is to find out how social studies education serves as
effective tool for national integration among the teachers and students of upper basic
education level in Zaria educational zone of Kaduna state. One of the research questions
is to what extent can social studies education serve as effective tool for national
integration among teachers and students of upper basic education level in Zaria
educational zone of Kaduna state? One of the hypotheses is there is no significant
difference between the opinion of teachers and students towards social studies education
as an effective tool for national integration among the teachers and students in Zaria
educational zone of Kaduna state . The study employed survey research and sampled
358 respondents from 6 schools, where 344 were upper basic education level 3 student
and 14 social studies teachers, out of 358 questionnaires, 354 were returned. The study
was carried out with the use of the structured questionnaire which was divided into
sections A, B, C, D. Section A covered the bio data of the respondents while the other
sections contained questions on social studies objectives, social studies teaching and
national integration, social studies teaching and learning process. The data collected
were analyzed using the t-test statistics in order to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of
significance. The result of the study revealed that there is no significant difference
between the opinion of the teachers and students, and between the upper basic2 and
upper basic3 teachers of social studies towards social studies education as tool for
national integration. Hypothesis 2 showed that there is a significant difference between
the opinions of the male and female respondents on social studies education as a tool for
national integration. In the light of the findings, some recommendations were made; they
include periodic review of the social studies curriculum so as to meet the needs of the
changing society, organization of seminar and workshops, the use of instructional
materials and effective teaching method. The teachers were advised to serve as role
model for their students. Finally recommendations were made for further studies.
