dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT Translation is an activity practised long time ago. Indeed, it started from the time of monks, with the translation of religious documents such as the Bible. That activity consists of translating a message from one language into another. In Niger Republic, translation is at its early stages for, most of those who are involved in it, are amateurs. They are practising it without the qualifications required in the field. Therefore, these translators are confronted with various difficulties when conveying the message from one language into the other. Our research aims at diagnosing these difficulties and suggesting solutions to overcome them. The study will enable us to discover these difficulties experienced by these translators. They are of two types : ā those related to linguistic factors ā and those related to socio-cultural parameters. Our study is divided into two main parts : The first part made up of three chapters gives an overview of translation and the problem of meaning. Chapter 1, defines translation and distinguishes translation types, and highlights major characteristics and translation premises. Chapter 2, examines the essentially communicative nature of translation activity, and the role of the actors involved, as well as the relevance of feedback mechanism. Chapter 3, undertakes theoretical discussions of meaning, linguistic sign and the purpose of its creation (that is its function). In addition, this chapter shows how the linguistic sign changes its meaning as well as the causes and principles of these changes. The chapter rounds off with the problem of transmitting meaning from one language into the other. The second part made up of two chapters investigates the difficulties experienced by Niger Republic translators when translating a message. Chapter 4, presents the different linguistic groups, the state of the translation activity and identification of the difficulties. Chapter 5, classifies the difficulties identified in four above into two main categories and gives a detailed analysis of them. Besides, our study enables us to make suggestions on how to overcome these problems and possibly avoid their occurrence. | en_US |
