Abstract
This study titled "An Evaluation
of Resettlement Schemes in Federal
Capital Territory, Abuja" is a study on relocation.
Relocation in this case was necessitated by the
building of a new capital in Abuja thus culminating
in a forced movement of people from their original
homes. The study set out to discover the effects of
this forced movement on the people who were moved to
new sites. The study specifically wanted to know if
the exercise had any effects on the agricultural
practices, income, infrastructural development and
thus the general well-being of the affected people.
The study was set on a simple hypothesis that
the resettlement exercises in the FCT has not brought
about a significant increase in the income,
agricultural production, level of infrastructural
development and the well-being of the resettled
rural inhabitants of the FCT. The data collected
was analyzed using simple percentages, tables,
graphs and charts of various kinds. It was
discovered from the results of the analysis that
though the FCT resettlement schemes have not brought
about a realization of all the anticipated benefits,
It was not without success at all,
A significant number of the respondents interviewed
in the course of the work agreed that the scheme
has brought a significant improvement in their
living conditions since their movement to new sites.
They have pointed out improved housing, road
development, higher output from farms, and other
social facilities as important areas where positive
developments had taken place. They, however, held
that they are experiencing a dwindling income. Their
view may be said to have been informed by political
considerations. They may believe that if they report
a situation of dwindling income, the government may
come to their aid. So their view, in total contrast
with the major findings of the work, could not be
proved and was, therefore, rejected. The earlier
postulation of an insignificant increase in the wellbeing
of the resettled people was thus rejected.
However, recommendations were made on ways of making
future resettlement activities in the FCT and elsewhere
a greater success. These recommendations concern the
issue of compensation, farmland, adequate housing and
other infrastructures and the functionality of the
infrastructures provided, A concluding remark was
finally made about the findings earlier reported.
