Abstract
Taking into consideration the importance of women in all fields of our
endeavour in the society in general, as a motivating factor, the researcher intends to
investigate the socio-cultural factors militating against female participation in
teaching services in Secondary Schools in Zamfara State.
This study was intended to identify the factors militating against female
participation in teaching services in Secondary Schools in Zamfara State with the
aim of suggesting possible solutions to the way out of the problems.
In order to achieve the desire goals of this work, the followings were
identified as the objectives of the study.
1. Examining whether female participation in teaching services in Secondary
2. Investigating the opinions of people generally on female participation in
teaching services in Secondary Schools in the State.
3. Investigating how female position can be reinforced in term of teaching
profession.
The study covered all the Secondary Schools and Zonal Educational Area
Offices of the state and four classes of respondents were identified as:-
Female teachers, Male teachers principals and officials of ministry of
education in the State.
A total of 151 respondents were stratified randomly selected to response to the items in
the research instrument, the breakdown are as follows:- Male teachers 38, Female
teachers 38, Principals of Secondary Schools 37 and parent 38.
This study has four Null Hypotheses which were formulated in the study.
Hypothesis one which is about parents' perception on Female participation
in teaching services was rejected because the chi-square calculated is greater than
table value chi-square.
Hypothesis two which is on female role model was retained as the chi- square
calculated is less the table value chi-square.
Hypothesis three on Urban and rural parents’ opinions on female
participation in teaching services was retained as the chi-square calculated is less the
table value chi-square.
Hypothesis four on whether parents preferred male teachers to the female
teachers for the education of their children was retained as the chi-square calculated
is less the table value chi-square.
Finally, findings of the research indicate that, organization of regular women
curriculums workshops, formation of parents Teacher Associations and
improvement in the image of teacher’s in term of conditions of services will enhance
female participation in the teaching services in Secondary schools in the State. Based
on these findings, recommendations and suggestions were made so as to enhance
female participation in teaching services in the state.

This study has six research questions which were raised in the study were
some are rejected such as female roles model has no influence to the female
participation in teaching services in Zamfara state.
Urban and rural parents has no differ towards female participation in
teaching services in the state while parents preferred male teachers to the female
teachers for the education of their children.
The study findings indicate that workshop, Parents Teachers Association
and improvement in the image of teachers in term of conditions of services will
increase female participation in the teaching services in Secondary Schools in
Zamfara Slate. Based on the findings of the research, recommendations and
suggestions were made to affect improvements.
