TEACHERS’ AND STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SOCIAL STUDIES IN ADDRESSING POVERTY IN SABON GARI AND ZARIA LGA’S KADUNA STATE

Abstract
The objective of the study was to find out the Teachers’ and Students’ Perception of Junior Secondary Social Studies in Addressing Poverty in Sabon Gari and Zaria Local Government Areas Kaduna State. The study examined the background of the study, statement of the problems, objective of the study research questions, hypothesis, significance of the study scope and delimitation of the study were all clearly specified. The respondents are students and teachers of government secondary schools in Zaria and Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna state. A review of various related relevance literature’s were made following the objective, research questions, hypothesis of the study of the work. All were intended to provide theoretical basis for methodology to be used for the study. It determined the research type which is descriptive survey research method, research design, population, sample and sampling procedure, instrumentation, validity of study, reliability of the study, pilot study procedure for data collection, data for statistical analysis. The data for the study was collected by using questionnaire with reliability coefficient of 830 by means of modified likert four point scale, the responses of the two variables that is students and teachers collected and analyzed the hypothesis were tested at 0.05 with level of significance df of 508. Non of the hypotheses were rejected in the study. Some of the major findings are that poverty usually relates to poor education background and that lack of good education and good occupation makes the people of Sabon Gari and Zaria to live in poverty. Also one of the major finding is that social studies education teaches the learners on how to acquire knowledge, skill attitudes and actions important in human relationships in the society that help to solve the problem of poverty among the people. Also based on findings of the study, the following recommendation are suggested that will go a long way in the use of social studies as a solution to the problem of poverty in Sabon Gari and Zaria Local Government of Kaduna State. The importance of social studies education in minimizing poverty should be taught in all classes of secondary schools, social studies can be used in achieving the objective of poverty alleviation programs through organizing public lectures for civil servants by social studies experts; discrimination against some tribes not considered as origin of the two local governments should be discourage to encourage positive contribution to the alleviation of poverty in the local government areas.
