Abstract
The study has been undertaken to find out the nature and
degree of difficulties with English vowels which are likely to
be encountered by Efik - Ibibio speakers who learn to speak
English. These difficulties have been hypothetically related
to the limited vowel system in the NL to which learners have
been exposed in the process of their learning to read and write
their own vernacular. It has also been suggested (and to some
extent demonstrated) that a thorough investigation of the NL
vowel system will reveal elements similar to TL vowels, and that
such elements can constitute points of departure towards
conquering the differences. The discovery of new elements has
come about by extending the investigation to the two other
age-long neglected sister dialects of Efik-Ibibio.
Insights have been gained from existing literature on
theoretical and applied linguistics involving both TL and NL.
The study has opted for the eeclectic approach in selecting both
descriptive and contrastive models,
Existing literature has constituted, the secondary source
for both TL and NL data. First hand NL data have come from
Interviews with native speaker subjects; while first hand TL
data have come from speech tests administered to subjects
selected from among the learners the study has in mind.
The contrastive Analysis itself has revealed the types of
problems likely to be encountered by learners - articulatory,
distributional, - and the difficulty related to the phonemic or
phonetic status of elements in the TL and NL systems. These
difficulties have been ranked mainly on the basis of articulator
and distributional features of elements involved.
From the CA results have been listed the voweld that shall
be taught to the learners, and the sequence in which they shall
be taught. Methods based on both behaviourist and cognitive
psycholinguistics have been suggested, together with suitable
teaching aids. Linguistic insights have been suggested as a
prerequisite for the teacher who aspires to carry out the task
of helping Efik - Ibibio speakers out of their difficulties
with English vowels.
Other areas of investigation have been suggested - to
enrich the language and provide data for language curriculum
materials.
