Exports serve several purposes in any given economy whether it is a developing or developed country. It is with this notion that Nigeria as a Nation strives to enhance its export trade through various means of which the establishment of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC is notable. This study is aimed at determining the extent of success or failure of the council in increasing exports generally, and more specifically non-oil exports. Thus, the study began with examination of the historical background of exports from Nigeria and the functions of NEPC as contained in the legal document establishing it. It continued with statement of the research problem and thereafter postulated hypotheses upon which the study is hinged. Relevant literature were reviewed, giving tie author greater insight of the whole concept of export trade the world over and in Nigeria in particular. Data were collected by both primary and sec In the course of the study, the researcher made a number of findings. The major findings include the following:A. The Nigerian Export Promotion Council has clearly defined statutory functions and responsibilities which if implemented will greatly enhance non-oil exports from Nigeria. B. The Council has so far registered achievements in the areas of generation of export consciousness, export potential survey/market development and establishing of commercial desks and trade centres in the overseas. Other achievements are in the areas of increased participation of Nigeria in Overseas International Trade Fairs and Administration of export incentives to deserving exporters. C. Slow implementation of export incentives Of the seventeen (1 7) existing export incentive schemes in the country, the researcher found that only four (4) are active. D. Major reasons for poor implementation of export policies are poor funding, inadequacy of technical (expertise) personnel and management. E. False notion of export drive. The researcher discovered that most people wrongly believe that exports from Nigeria have increased since the establishment of NEPC. The truth is that exports have not increased but their value has risen steadily due to the inflationary trend in the economy. Based on the analysis of data, appropriate summary, recommendations and conclusion were drawn. The study serves as a veritable piece which assesses factually the Nigerian Export Promotion Council's attempt to promote exports from Nigeria.en_US
