This study was designed to identify the self-esteem problem of the youths and the
influence self-esteem problems have on their perception of psychosocial effects of AIDS.
The sample of 278 respondents from a population of 2,748 students in Benue State
University, Makurdi and College of Education Katsina-Ala was drawned.
The instruments used for data collection were a questionnaire and a standardized
scale. The questionnaire named Psychosocial Effects of AIDS questionnaire was developed
by the researcher. The scale was named Index of Self-esteem Scale (ISS) developed and
standardized by Hudson. Both the questionnaire and the scale were validated. The
Instruments were usee, to collect data from the respondents.
The data collected were analysed using Chi square, Point Biserial and t-test statistic
to test the five hypotheses slated for the study. These hypotheses were:
1. There is no significant relationship between the youths self-esteem and
psychosocial effects of AIDS score.
2. There is no significant difference in the frequency of self-esteem problem
between the male and female respondents.
3. There is no significant difference in the frequency of self-esteem problem
between youths in College of Education, Katsina-Ala and those in Benue State
University, Makurdi.
4. There is no significant difference in the distribution of those youths free from
self-esteem problem and those not in the two institutions.
5. There is no significant difference between youths who have self-esteem
problems and those who do not in their perception of psychosocial effects of
AIDS.
vi
The result of the analysis revealed that hypotheses 1, 4 and 5 were rejected for a
significant relationship and difference was found for hypothesis 1, 4 and 5 respectively.
Hypotheses 2 and 3 were retained for no significant difference was found.
Arising from these findings, the researcher recommended that:
1. Both institutions should establish functional counselling centres to address the
self-esteem problems of the youths.
2. That a more intensive and extensive research be conducted either State-wide
in Benue to have a comprehensive data on youths self-esteem.
3. A more systematic and continuous efforts be made to make youths realize the
effects of AIDS on individual's psychological and social being.
