dc.description.abstractAcademic staff turnover has for long been the bane of academic growth and development in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. This study was undertaken to find out factors responsible for academic staff turnover in the University and explore ways and means through which the turn-over could be curbed. The respondents in this study consisted purely of all the academic staff of the University drawn from all the 81 departments. They were divided into three categories namely, the present academic staff, the former academic staff and lastly, the Heads of Department. All staff involved totaled 297 in number. Three questionnaires were used for the three categories of subjects. The Statistical tests namely Pearson Product Moment Correction Statistics, and chi-square were used in testing the hypotheses of the study. The study made the following findings: . It was discovered that the high rate of academic staff affected the staff strength of academic departments, leading to heavy teaching load on the present staff. . As a result of the heavy teaching load, existing courses could not be taught neither could new courses be introduced. 3. It was also gathered that regular promotion, conduce sociopolitical environment and other such conditions of service could help retain staff. The following recommendations among others were made following the findings. 1. that the following services in the university be improved upon. a. personnel management b. promotion of academic staff c. accommodation d. staff training programme e. working materials and equipment . Management should create conducive research and working opportunities. . The management should imbibe the notion of fair-play towards staff and not discriminatory policies. . The University authority should eliminate internal politics on issues that affect staff. . The issue of insecurity of life and property should be properly addressed by the University authority. . Health and education subsidies for staff and their family be provided. . Introduction of inducement allowance be made.en_US
