Abstract
This study examines not necessarily dysfunctionalism in its totality but rather the problems that lead to dysfunctionalism of literary drama in Nigeria. For the purpose of this work, dysfunctionalism is defined as an impairment or abnormality of the functioning of an organ. By this definition, the effectiveness of literary drama in communicating its desired message(s) in Nigeria is impaired and this research explores the scope and nature of this impairment by drawing examples from the plays of Wole Soyinka. This thesis therefore examines the relationship and the level of mutual intelligibility between the playwright, (the conceive r of the idea) and the consumer of the product of conception, that is, the target readership. This inability is traced to the problem of content and form of the plays. In this study, we explore the ways to overcome the problems that may hinder the achievement of adequate communication and feedback in literary drama in Nigeria. This is obviously so as this ought to be the paramount force behind each dramatic work.
