Abstract
Information technology has been regarded as the most important dimension of human
technological advances in this 21st century. It is seen as a basis for development in any
society. For the Nigerian nation to benefit from this advancement, it is necessary that the
knowledge be transmitted through the schools to learners who are prospective leaders of the
nation. Teacher librarians are information specialists who work collaboratively with
classroom teachers in planning, teaching, and evaluating students. Teacher librarian is an
individual who hold both recognized teaching qualification and qualification in librarianship
(ASLA, 2007).The study aimed at examining the attitude of secondary schools teacher
librarian towards information technology in Kaduna State, with regards to types of
information technology being used by teacher librarian, attitude of teacher librarian toward
information technology, level of usefulness of the available information technology in the
schools and used of available information technology by teacher librarian as well as factor
affecting the attitude of teacher librarian toward information technology in secondary
schools. Survey research method was adopted. Thus two hundred and sixty four (264) was
used as sample size for the study. Questionnaire was the instruments used for data collection.
The data collected were presented and analysed using descriptive statistics. The study found
that computer, typewriter, computer printer respectively were the major types of information
technology available in the schools. Teacher librarians have positive attitude toward
information technology as shown in the score of 240 foe respondents who opined that
information technology can enhance students learning. The major limitation in the use of
information technology is electricity and most modern information devices required the use of
electricity to power them. The inferential analysis showed that the teacher librarians’ attitude
towards information technology is not significantly influenced by the available information
technology devices in the schools, and there is no significant relationship between teacher
librarians’ attitudes towards information technology and their usage of the available devices
in the schools. The study concluded that teacher librarians in Kaduna state secondary schools
have a highly positive attitude towards the use of information technology for teaching and
learning. Inadequacy of IT resources, lack of confidence, anxiety, inadequate training, lack of
access to technology, poor infrastructural/social facilities and epileptic power supply were
some of the constraints that significantly influenced the teacher librarians’ attitude towards
IT usage in secondary schools. As one of the ways to deal with some of the constraints that
influence the teacher librarians’ attitude towards IT usage in secondary schools, effort should
be made at improving the provision of power supply. Where the national power is not
available, provision for generators for local supply could be considered as an option.
