Abstract
This study examined the effects of Herrmann‟s Whole-Brain Model on Retention and
Academic Performance among Secondary School Physics Students in Zaria Education Zone
Kaduna, Nigeria. The study was guided by four research objectives, four research questions
and four null hypotheses. Pretest, posttest and post-posttest quasi-experimental design was
employed for the purpose of the study. The population of this study comprised all public coeducational secondary school Physics students two (SSII) in Zaria education zone, Kaduna
state with the total population of 1,422 out of which two schools with 228 SS II Physics
students were sampled using simple random sampling technique. A validated and reliable
instrument, Wave Performance Test (WPT) with reliability coefficient of 0.762 developed
by the researcher was used for generating data. Research Questions raised were answered
using means and standard deviations while the null hypotheses were tested using t-test
statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed a significant difference in
performance in favour of students exposed to the Herrmann‟s Whole-Brain Model (P=0.00
at α≤0.05). The results also revealed no significant difference in performance of male and
female students exposed to HWBM (P=0.37 at α≤0.05). The result further revealed that the
students exposed to HWBM had better retention compared to their counterpart who were
taught using lecture method (P=0.00 at α≤0.05). However, the difference in retention of
male and female students exposed to HWBM was not statistically significant (P=0.34 at
α≤0.05). The study concluded that the HWBM is effective in the teaching and learning of
Wave concepts in senior secondary schools and it is gender friendly. Based on the findings,
the following recommendations were made among others: Teachers should employ HWBM
in the teaching of Wave concepts in senior secondary schools to enhance students‟ retention
and academic performance. Workshops and seminars for Physics teachers should be
organized by the Ministry of Education for each education zone in Kaduna state on the use
of HWBM
