Abstract
The study titled Information Provision and Utilization for Academic Mentoring of Undergraduate Students in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was embarked upon to investigate what academic mentoring information provision and its subsequent utilization or lack of provision on information for mentoring can have on the mentoring culture of the institution. The objectives of the study were achieved by formulating and answering eight (8) research questions, and 2 hypotheses tested at α 0.05. The research questions sought to find out what academic mentoring style is utilized, sources of information on academic mentoring, types of information provided for the support of academic mentoring, who are responsible for the provision of information for academic mentoring, which category of users utilize the information provided for academic mentoring, the channels used to provide information on academic mentoring, what barriers hinder the provision of information for academic mentoring, and how the barriers can be removed to enhance the provision of information for academic mentoring. The population of the study comprises of the lecturers and undergraduate students in the twelve faculties of the University. Survey research design was adopted for this research. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 30% from the population. The instrument used to collect data for the study was questionnaire, which was administered to Academics and Undergraduate Students. Data collected from the research questions were analyzed using frequencies count, pie chart and histogram, while Null Hypotheses formulated were analyzed and tested using One Way ANOVA. The research findings revealed among others that majority of the Academic staff and undergraduate students acknowledged that Traditional/informal mentoring was the most utilized mentoring style. Interpersonal communication among academics and their students was discovered to be the most reliable source of information for mentoring. Provision of information for academic mentoring is inadequate and this has a profound effect on the mentoring culture. Majority of academic staff who need information on academic mentoring do not actually have access to such information. The research concluded that non-implementation of formal academic mentoring program is mainly responsible for the inadequacy in the provision and utilization of academic mentoring information among academics and undergraduate students in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Therefore, several recommendations were made, two of which are calling for the establishment and incorporation of academic mentoring programs for undergraduate students into the existing teaching and learning development initiatives; and the management of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria across all levels should put in place strategic mechanisms to disseminate information to support, encourage and facilitate the participation of academics and undergraduate students in the mentoring process
