THE EFFECT OF LIME AND NITROGEN SOURCES ON THE YIELD AND YIELD PARAMETERS OF TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill)

dc.description.abstractA greenhouse and two field studies (wet and dry seasons), were conducted over a two-year period (1994 to 1995) at Samaru (11° 11'N 7° 38'E) in the northern guinea savanna zone of Nigeria to evaluate the effects of lime and nitrogen sources on the yield and yield-related parameters of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum mill). The treatments consisted of all possible combinations of five lime rates (0. 0.10. 0.25, 0.40 and 0.55 t/ha. for green house and wet season, while for dry season, the lime rates were increased to 0,1.12, 2.24, 4.48 and 8.96 t/ha), two N sources (Urea and CAN) and three tomato 4 varieties (TI 221. TI 106 and TI 539). The treatments were replicated three times in a randomised complete block design. Plant height, number of leaves, branches, fruits, mean fruit diameter, weight and total fruit yield, were significantly (at P=0.05) increased by liming at 0.40 and 0.55 t/ha for green house and wet season, while values were significantly (at P = 0.05) higher at 2.24 and 4.48 t/ha for dry season. Yield and yield related parameters were significantly higher with the application of CAN than Urea, throughout the studies. Variety TI 221 gave significantly higher values in terms of yield and yield-related parameters than the other two varieties. Generally nutrient concentrations in plant tissues from the green house and wet season was slightly increased, while for the dry season the increase was significant (for some elements) with increasing lime rates and N sources. Soil pH and exchangeable cations were slightly increased at 0.55/hlime rate in the wet season. For the dry season, soil pH and exchangeable cations were significantly (P = 0.05) increased at higher lime rates (4.48 and 8.96 t/ha). There was no significant increase in soil pH and exchangeable cations with respect to N sources.en_US
