Abstract
ABSTRACT
Formal correspondence now the bane of "business
organisation has its specifics. Unfortunately, some of
these specifics are either not fully known or are mixed up
from time to time by many Nigerian writers.
This study attempted to assess how Nigerians perform
in the area of formal correspondence writing. The study
identified the features of formal correspondence as they
are universally known and compared them with the features
of formal correspondence as used by Nigerians in their
write-ups.
Ninety-two letters which were randomly collected from
three sets of institutions in Nigeria served as the data.
The study treated, reappraised critically:
(a) Informal versus formal correspondence
(b) Universally identifiable features of formal
correspondence against the locally imposed ones and
(c) The format of formal correspondence versus the
language used by Nigerians.
It was found out that many Nigerian writers of formal
correspondence use these features of formality but are at
times inconsistent in the usage., The letters failed to
strike a balance between the requirements of language and
format.
The investigator has recommended a systematic exposure
of both Nigerian learners and the executives to the
vii
requirements of formal correspondence. In addition further
study needs to be done on the academic background of writers
of such formal correspondence..
