Abstract
Agricultural development has been a major concern to most developing countries within the last two decades. A review of current response to food crisis across the world has shown that there is a need for agricultural development, expansion, increased production per acre of cropped land or per head of livestock, agricultural growth and agricultural transformation. The significance of the role of women in agriculture is prominent; however the paucity of agricultural information has remained one of the factors militating against women‟s active and productive participation in agriculture in Nigeria regardless of the existence of women friendly agricultural programmes. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to study the influence of communication on the agricultural participation of women in Askean community of Ussa Local Government Area of Taraba State. The study deployed Gender and Development Theory and Reflect Theory as theoretical framework and a comprehensive questionnaire was prepared and administered to women farmers in Askean community in Taraba State. In view of this, 381copies of questionnaire were administered while 372 copies were retrieved. In addition, Key Informant Interview (KII) and |Focus Group Discussion (FGD) were also used to elicit data for the study. Thus, it was revealed that the participation of women in agricultural activities in Askean community was high as a result of various communication strategies deployed by Taraba Agricultural Development Programme (TADP) over time. It was discovered that factors such as poor funding, low level of education, and health challenges affected women‟s participation in agriculture in Askean community. Furthermore, it was found out that radio and local media of communication with local contents were mostly effective among the various communication channels deployed by TADP to enhance women‟s participation in Askean community. The study recommended that TADP should initiate sustainable communication strategies to further improve the level of participation in the community and that government and non-governmental agencies should make efforts to provide funding to women farmers in rural communities with a view to increasing agricultural output as well as addressing the issue of poor health and illiteracy through adult and non former education of women farmers.
