The study critically assessed the food intake and stress management of lactating mothers practicing exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto metropolis in Sokoto State. A survey research method was adopted for the study using a total number of four hundred and seventy seven as the population. A sample size of two hundred and fourteen was selected based on Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table of sample selection, from four selected hospitals in Sokoto metropolis. The sample size for each hospitals was done, using proportionate sampling technique because the population was not equal. Four (4) objectives were stated in study and four research questions while two null hypotheses were formulated. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire, which was validated and pilot study with a reliability index of 0.82. The research questions were analysed using Likert scale type of scores with mean of 2.5 as a decision point. Further, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC) was used to test the two null hypotheses. The result showed the computed calculated value and therefore the null hypotheses were rejected. The results showed that carbohydrate and protein mean intake were far below the recommended dietary allowance standard and cultural beliefs of the people affected the exclusive breastfeeding mothers’ food intake. The results also showed that exclusive breastfeeding mothers experienced some stress among which were excessive fatigues, urge to sleep and lower back pain. Further, it showed that the stress management practiced by exclusive breastfeeding mothers included, relaxation of muscles, use of drugs and exercise and diet among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that enlightenment programmes should be organised by health workers, Home Economics association of Nigeria, and other non-governmental organisations that have the interest of mothers at heat. This would go a long way, to improve, help minimize stress and well being of mothers maintained.en_US
