Abstract
The main thrust of this study is to assess the impact of additional responsibilities of academic staff on the management of universities in Nigeria. Ten objectives, research questions and hypotheses were formulated to ascertain the level or degree of impact of additional responsibilities of academic staff on the Management of Universities in Nigeria. Extensive review was made on relevant conceptual framework of the study which include the concept of management, concept of responsibility and issues of additional responsibilities in Nigerian Universities. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study covered all the thirty seven (37) federal, thirty seven (37) state and fifty (50)private universities in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. For sample and sampling technique, thirty seven (37) representing 30% of the one hundred and twenty four (124) universities were randomly selected and used in this study. In selecting the sample size of the respondents from the 37 universities randomly selected, a proportional sampling technique was determined to use 1200 out of 5,184 respondents. The instrument used for data collection was the Likert rating scale, carrying between 5-1 point. Simple mean, percentages, frequency tables, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance and Scheffe’s Test were used for effective analysis and testing the ten hypotheses formulated. The results of the study revealed that, only two out of ten null hypotheses were rejected to mean that there was significant difference existing in the opinions of the four (4) categories of respondents (Universities Directors, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments and Examination officers). While the other eight null hypotheses were accepted to mean that there was no any significant difference existing in the opinions of the four (4) categories of respondents. Among others, the outcome of the findings revealed that, additional responsibilities hindered academic staff from attending conferences, seminars and workshops; additional responsibilities hindered academic staff from publishing academic journals for promotion; additional responsibilities hindered academic staff from carrying out their primary assignment properly. Based on the results and findings of the research, the following strategies are recommended for government, NUC, Universities Management and entire academic staff to redress the situation: (a)since, Nigerian Universities are plagued with acute shortage of academic staff therefore, it is suggested that more academic staff should be employed so as to avoid too much giving of additional responsibilities to lecturers in Nigerian Universities. (b) The Universities Management should reduce the number of enrolment of student admitted every year or else to produce more classrooms and lecture theatres and lecturers so as to make an academic staff use a good instructional time and inspires students to do well and to know more.
