dc.description.abstractABSTRACT ERROR ANALYSIS OF THE VERBAL CATEGORIES IN . THE CASE OF ANGOLPHONE STUDENTS OF FRENCH The aim of this work is to take a critical look at the errors made by English-speaking students of French. The errors treated are those concerning verbal categories. The verbal categories in question are: Tense, Aspect, Mood. In the course of this study, these three categories were studied. 1. The tenses were classified under three divisions: Present, Past, Future. The Present has no sub-divisions. The Past is divided into: Past continous tense, Present Perfect tense, Preterit, Past Anterior tense, Past Perfect tense. The Future is divided into: Simple Future tense, Immediate Future tense ( Futur Proche in French ) , Future Anterior tense. 2. The Aspect is classified as: Accomplished and Unaccomplished. Under these two are the tenses which express them: The Accomplished Aspect involves; Present Perfect, Past Perfect, Past Anterior and Future Anterior. The Unaccomplished Aspects involves: Present, Past continuos, Simple Future. However, certain adverbials may sometimes intervene to alter a particular aspect. 3. Then the Moods were grouped into Moods of Reality and Moods of Non-reality. The Moods of Reality are: Indicative, Infinitive, Present Participle, Gerondif and Imperative. The moods of Non-reality are: Conditional and Subjunctive. Within the Non-reality the Conditional is a hypothetical mood. Inventory of errors made by students while using the three verbal categories was taken and studied. The source materials were constituted by the students' classwork and assignment. The learners comprised both workers and students in the beginners' class as well as regular students of 100 and 200 levels. These errors were then classified and treated according to the verbal category they fall into. The theoretical frame was provided by traditional and generative syntaxes. It was observed that most of the errors were made due to the fact that the French Language and the English Language do not possess the same structure in other words the two languages are not isomorphic. Other reasons for the errors were found in students' misunderstanding of conjugations in French.It became necessary for us to find ways of rectifying these errors and avoiding their occurrence. Suggestions were proferred on how to take care of these problems.en_US
